How to Choose the Best Gynecologist for You

When choosing a gynecologist, it’s important to find a doctor who can offer the best care options for you. Because every woman is different, we know it can seem difficult to find a doctor who understands your particular background and healthcare needs – and with whom you feel comfortable on a personal level!

A Woman's Healing Center Doctors

A Woman’s Healing Center’s all-female OB-GYNs love working with each individual woman who comes to our practice and getting to know them.  We look forward to celebrating the joys of births and partner with our patients to conquer the challenges of aging.

We’re on your side.

If you’re still in search of the best gynecologist in Fort Collins, we hope you’ll make an appointment to meet one of our doctors.  Not sure how to decide if an OB-GYN or practice is right for you?

Here are 6 tips on how to choose the best gynecologist for you.

1. Figure Out What Services You Need

Each gynecologist’s office will offer a variety of healthcare services, so it’s important to make sure you know what services you’re looking for. If you need routine women’s exams, like a Well Woman Exam or Breast Exam, you might consider a general gynecologist or women’s health specialist.

If you’re hoping to get pregnant within the next few years or want information on birth control, you should look for an office with OB-GYN services.  It is not the case that all gynecologists also offer prenatal care and delivery support.

An office with both obstetricians and gynecologists, like ours, can also help you with more specific needs, like urinary incontinence, endometriosis, or cancer.

2. Find a Gynecologist with Experience

Because your healthcare needs can vary, another tip is to find a doctor with experience. This can include the service areas you’re looking for, hospitals they’re affiliated with, and how long they’ve been practicing.

For example, if you have a condition like endometriosis, you want to make sure that your gynecologist has past experience diagnosing and treating it.  Our doctors are endometriosis and GYN surgical experts, who are renown in their fields for their expertise.

3. Consider the Gender of Your Gynecologist

For some women, the gender of a gynecologist doesn’t matter, but others might feel more comfortable speaking honestly with a doctor of a certain gender.  Many women come to our practice because they value having a doctor who has shared their intimate concerns and experiences.

When choosing a prenatal care provider, keep in mind that the doctor you see for checkups along the way may not actually be the one to deliver your baby.  If you feel more comfortable having a woman in the room while you give birth than a man, then consider choosing an all-female gynecology office which guarantees a woman doctor no matter who is on call.

4. Find Out What Hospitals They’re Affiliated With

If you need obstetric services or certain gynecological tests, you will visit your doctor’s hospital. This is something to take into consideration because you want to know that you’ll be comfortable and taken care of at the hospital.

You can research your gynecologist’s affiliation, and decide for yourself if their hospital is one that you trust. You may also want to consider the hospital’s location, especially if you frequently visit the hospital for a chronic condition or pregnancy checkups, to make sure it’s conveniently located to you.

5. Take a Look at How They Communicate

Communicating with your doctor is an important part of effective healthcare. If you don’t feel like your doctor understands you or listens to you, it can be difficult to receive tests, diagnoses, and treatment options you need.

When meeting with a gynecologist for the first time, pay attention to the way they speak to you and the way that they listen to you.  If you don’t feel listened to or if you felt rushed, it may be a sign to look for care elsewhere.

6. Find Someone You Feel Comfortable With

Gynecology appointments are very personal, and you deserve to feel comfortable with your doctor. It can be helpful to set up an initial appointment with a gynecologist to talk through your needs and develop a relationship.

This way you’ll know if you’re comfortable speaking openly with them before you receive a well-woman exam or other gynecological exams.
